This Railway Mail Service hat dates from 1898 and is the Postal Artifact of the Month for March 2018. From the mid 1870s through the end of the century Railway Mail Service clerks had to wear a uniform of pants, a jacket and this hat. With the introduction of the Eagle Badge (postal artifact of February 2018) the badge alone was enough. Some clerks continued to wear the hats.

  1. Hello. Requesting permission to use the image of any uniform or hat worn by a Railway Postal Clerk in the 1890s. As displayed here https://railwaymail.org/2018/03/04/rms-postal-hat/
My ancestor – Charley Brother – a Civil War Marine – would have worn this and I would like to upload the site – and link to your site – from http://www.CharleyBrother.com. I wrote a bit about his time as an RPO in the book “The Boys of Bath” as well as the bond the men had, similar to Civil War Veterans as many were. And I continue to research that kind of job for my next project. Thank you for considering this and for putting this site together.
